01Where it started
Victor had tried to work out before and never stuck with it. What changed the stakes was his health: daily chest pains at the office — bad enough that he was considering quitting his job — on top of years of being overweight and a blood pressure that had started to climb.
"Daily chest pains at the office. I was even considering quitting my job."

Working out alone, motivation never lasted. The real obstacle was mental — a body that didn't want to change, and how easy it is to talk yourself out of going when you're tired or busy. Having a trainer removed the exit.
03The turning point
The first thing that hooked him was how he felt afterward — the stress released and gone for a day or two at a time. What surprised him most was learning you could use bands to train around joint pain; he'd never known that was even possible.
04The new life
He's down 20 pounds and his blood pressure is back in a great range. The pain that used to shadow his lifts is gone, too — he had shoulder pain on the bench and low-back pain deadlifting. Ten months in, he presses the 45s and pulls 215 for reps, clean.
But the change he values most is mental — a new fortitude that came from training the body. Strong body, strong mind. The people around him noticed the weight; more importantly, they say he's calmer now, and slower to anger.
"Your health is an investment. You either spend the time and money now, or you spend it later on medical treatments."
